My emotional journey through yoga

The first time I ever practiced Yoga was actually to a video rather than in a live class. But from that first moment I was hooked. At the time I was living in a small town and the closest to a yoga class that I was able to attend was a pilates class down the road from work. So I started a 10 week pilates course and enjoyed it, but once that finished I went back to videos/DVD’s. Fast forward a couple of years, having moved to London with a busy schedule, I was still practicing yoga on a regular-ish basis but life in the city was taking over my practice (I originally come from a big city, so I’m used to it) .

In April 2012 I then got some devastating news, that shook my whole world and made me and my world fall to pieces from one second to the next, when I was told that my dad had lost his battle with cancer. I was on the next plane home and was just on auto-pilot, I still remember the tube journey to the airport, thinking and wondering how things would be from now on without him here. About six months after he passed, I started doing yoga again to help me deal with all the emotions that I had to deal with and as a way to look after myself, to take out some time for myself. That’s when I started following different YouTube Channels, such as Yoga with Adriene. I connected straight away with her Find what feels good (#fwfg) mantra and started to enjoy doing yoga again. During that time I took my first public class in London with a really good yoga teacher, she was an amazing teacher for beginners and I still remember some of the things she taught us in class and will incorporate some of that into my own teaching. The joys of living in London is that there are many amazing teachers, so many that I don’t actually have a teacher I regularly went to, I just wanted to try them all and their different styles 🙂

I was thinking about doing a Yoga Teacher Training for quite some time, as I experienced first hand what a difference yoga can do and I wanted to help others to deal with whatever they are going through and give them an hour to themselves to escape their everyday life. But with everything in life, you have doubts and make excuses not to do it. At the beginning of 2016 I did a foundation course with a Yoga school in London and then signed up for their YTT, which I’m in my last couple of months in. I wouldn’t have started the YTT if it wasn’t for my Dad and my theory exam is going to be on his birthday, so no doubt such as every practice, I will dedicate the practice that morning to him. Dedicating the practice to someone close to the heart really helps to connect with yourself and the practice itself. The last 10 month during my YTT have been interesting and only just started to get an emotional journey for me. I know my body still holds a lot of the emotion and grief but with every practice I release more and more and I find my true self more. For the last 10 weeks I’ve been practicing meditation nearly every day, which has been an interesting experience for me as I never really ‘believed’ in it but at the moment I couldn’t do without it. It is just a different practice to yoga flow, which is what I’m used to and it took a while for me to get into it but it’s helping me, which is what counts.

This year has a lot in store for me especially as I’m doing a Pre- and Post-natal yoga teacher training three weeks after my practical exam. Yoga has shown me that I can make a difference in peoples life and that’s it’s important to be kind and gentle to yourself and to others, you never know what is going on in someone else’s life. Yoga has also shown me that I want to make a difference to other people lives and make it better, even if it’s only for half an hour or a few minutes.
